First Friday with Ricardo R. Diaz May 5
Laurel Book Store welcomes Ricardo R. Diaz and Diaz's art for the month of May.
My work is about images passing through the frames of life, representing the reflections of life and times of a Chicano urban artist.
My subject matter is autobiographical in content, but not necessarily self portraiture. My works are inventions and self examinations and what it is to be a Chicano artist seeking a place in an Eurocentric environment which is reflected thru my appropriations and variations of European and contemporary masters.
When I am in the act of painting, I seek a state of magical reality thru meditation and intuition. But as soon as I start thinking about the passing of time, my work seems to show signs of anxiety, stress and despair.
Time fleeting and not working in the studio is detrimental to any serious practicing artist. My thought is, What to paint and how to paint it? And how many more works are left, in this 77 year old spirit, for me to create?
Ricardo's paintings will be on display throughout the month of May.
