Independent Bookstore Day

California Bookstore Day has gone national! It's now Independent Bookstore Day!

Drop by Laurel Bookstore on May 2nd to see all the fun things we've got cooking!

Just what does IBD celebrate?

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.
Indie bookstores, whether dusty and labyrinthine or clean and well-lighted, are not just stores, they are solutions. They hold the key to your love life, your career, and your passions. Walking the aisles of a good bookstore means stumbling upon a novel from India that expands your heart. It’s encountering an art book that changes the direction of your life. It’s the joy of having a perfect stranger steer you toward the perfect book.

In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism.  They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

So what have we got going on?

Get here via Lyft, show us your receipt, and get a goodie bag courtesy of our friends at HarperCollins publishers.

Get or have stamped the IBD passport. At the third store you get a prize! Also the 6th, 9th, 12th.... how ambitious are you?

We will have all the amazing items that are on sale only at Indies that day. Take home something very special.

We will have hourly drawings for prizes!

10am Start your day with scones from Tart! Bakery while they last.

11am Meet author Summer Brenner who set two of her books for young people in Richmond and Oakland.

12:30 Meet illustrator/author/animator Julie Bayless. Her first picture book will be out in the fall and she'll be making drawings with and for kids. We will hold a drawing for a signed copy to be delivered when the book releases!

2pm Meet Kathrine LaFleur and chat about her books for middle grade readers.

4:30pm Meet Teresa LeYung Ryan, author of Build Your Writer's Platform & Fanbase in 22 Days. Are you a writer or have a business? Come and talk with Teresa about being seen!
