Launch Party for "Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine" with Illustrator April Chu
April Chu will be joining us at Laurel Bookstore to celebrate the launch of her latest illustrated book Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine on international Ada Lovelace Day! Ada Lovelace was a pioneer of technology and continues to be a role model. What better way to honor the achievments of women in STEM than the release party of a book all about this revolutionary woman!
Ada Lovelace, the daughter of the famous romantic poet, Lord Byron, develops her creativity through science and math. When she meets Charles Babbage, the inventor of the first mechanical computer, Ada understands the machine better than anyone else and writes the world’s first computer program in order to demonstrate its capabilities.
This spellbinding illustrated biography introduces children to the possibilities of science and technology at a young age. Over a hundred years before the invention of the electronic computer, when women had very few options outside the home, Ada followed her aspirations and became the world’s first computer programmer. The story serves as an inspiration for children, especially girls, to be fearless in pursuing their passions.
April Chu started her career as an architect but has returned to her true passion of illustrating and storytelling. She has since collaborated with authors to infuse diversity into picture books in such titles as In a Village by the Sea which has received starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly along with rave reviews in The New York Times.
