Launch Party for "George" by Alex Gino

Join us at Laurel Bookstore for the exciting launch party of George, the debut book by local Oakland author Alex Gino! Gino will read from their fantastic book coming out August 25th followed by Q&A and a signing. It's sure to be good!

When people look at George, they see a boy. But George knows she’s a girl.

George thinks she’ll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte’s Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can’t even try out for the part … because she’s a boy.

With the help of her best friend Kelly, George comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte – but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.

Alex Gino loves glitter, ice cream, gardening, awe-ful puns, and stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of being alive. Born and raised on Staten Island, NY, Alex is prouder of graduating from Stuyvesant High School than from the University of Pennsylvania. They have been involved with queer and trans activism for twenty years, and currently serve on the Board of Directors of NOLOSE, an all-volunteer body-positive organization committed to fat, queer, feminist, anti-oppression ideology. Having moved across the country in an old RV during the summer of 2008, Alex enjoys the heck out of living in Oakland, California.

When Alex started writing GEORGE in 2003, they had no idea how long of a journey it would be, but the hole in children’s literature was clear, and they knew how they wanted to fill it. Now, after countless revisions, breaks of frustration, and days spent staring at drafts willing them to be better, Alex is delighted and proud to present GEORGE to the world.
